Heating systems are more efficient than ever. Furnaces, for instance, are much more efficient than they were even a decade ago. The most energy-efficient way to heat a home is with a heat pump.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

This type of heat pump will capture heat and release it outside during the summer. In the winter, it does the reverse and heats your home. A heat pump can extract heat even from cold air, although they become pretty inefficient once temperatures fall below freezing. It’s for this reason that they work best in moderate to warm climates.

When they are heating your home, an air-source heat pump circulates refrigerant. The refrigerant changes back and forth between a liquid and gaseous state, gathering heat when it becomes a gas. The gas then releases heat, which blows into your home.

At AC Mechanical, Inc, we install heat pumps for homeowners in the greater Cheyenne, Wyoming, area. We have been in business since 2002.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

A geothermal heat pump exchanges heat between your home and the ground. This system has a series of pipes buried in your yard. The pipes don’t need to be buried that deep because the temperature even a few feet underground stays between 45 to 60 degrees throughout the year.

While both types of heat pumps are energy-efficient, geothermal heat pumps are more efficient than air-source heat pumps. They can cut your heating bill by up to 70% versus other options. They are this efficient because they are always exchanging heat that is pretty mild, never getting too hot or warm.

Geothermal heat pumps are more expensive to install than air-source heat pumps, though. This is because the HVAC company needs to dig holes and trenches for the buried pipes.
